We partnered with KSBY News for the third year in a row to support childhood literacy with the “If You Give a Child a Book…” campaign through the Scripps Howard Foundation. We rallied the community between August 28 and September 9, and together, we raised over $75,000!
Now more than ever, children need access to books in their homes, and this campaign seeks to make sure books are available to kids who need them most. Childhood literacy is one of the biggest predictors of educational success. A child who can’t read at grade level by the end of third grade is four times less likely to graduate.
Access to books at home and one-on-one reading time has a significant impact on literacy, but 61% of low-income students have zero books at home. That’s where the “If You Give a Child a Book…” campaign comes in — funds raised will allow all students at Arellanes, Bonita, Lillian Larsen, and Oceano Elementary Schools to select five books each from a special scholastic book fair next January to launch their personal home libraries!
