Elementary Schools Make Memories With Education Grants

June 30, 2019
by Team SESLOC

Not every kid can say they went to the Superbowl or got their first book published while still in elementary school. But students in our community can, thanks to SESLOC Education Grants.

Three local elementary schools recently used grants to do something extraordinary for their students:

Orcutt Union School District brings over 300 fourth, fifth, and sixth graders from schools across Northern Santa Barbara County for their annual Mathematics Superbowl. Students showcase their problem-solving, math, and collaboration skills to compete for individual and team awards. SESLOC is thrilled to support this event for fourth year in a row.

Lillian Larsen Elementary’s third grade students enjoyed a trip to the Atascadero Zoo, where they came face to face with the animals for some hands-on science lessons. One student from the San Miguel area school exclaimed, “I can’t believe we touched a chuckwalla! It looked just like the one in our book!”

Georgia Brown Elementary’s first grade students are now proud published authors. Heidi Cooper, a teacher at the Paso Robles school, needed a little extra funding for printing supplies to launch her Young Authors project. Her students wrote and published their very own hardcover books, and because Georgia Brown is a dual language immersion school, many used the opportunity to write in their second language. Not only did they have a lot of fun making their books, but seeing their work in print was a major boost to their self-esteem and confidence.

Thank you to the Orcutt team, Nicole, and Heidi for your commitment to classroom learning!

With our roots as a credit union for San Luis Obispo county educators, SESLOC has a strong commitment to education — and we supports classroom learning, creativity, and innovation through our Education Grants program.

Pre-K through 12th grade teachers and directors of enrichment programs at accredited schools within San Luis Obispo and Northern Santa Barbara Counties are invited to apply for grants up to $500 to fund special projects and expand classroom resources. We awarded $20,000 in Education Grants during the 2018-2019 school year.

SESLOC supports our community. Help us support local schools by sharing the grant application with Central Coast teachers or applying today.
