On Friday, October 11, SESLOC returned to Pacific Beach High School in San Luis Obispo for a second year to engage 55 students in the Bite of Reality simulation. This hands-on event immerses students in a realistic budgeting app, providing them with valuable insights into managing finances. Through interactive scenarios, participants learn to navigate the distinction between needs and wants, equipping them with essential budgeting skills for real life.
“SESLOC is committed to improving the financial health and wellness of the community and its members,” said SESLOC’s Education Outreach Manager, Vincent Delgado. “We partner with the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation and Bite of Reality as it offers a valuable opportunity for students to develop essential life skills, especially for those at Pacific Beach High School, a continuation high school committed to providing an alternative secondary education.”
During the simulation, participants are assigned fictional roles that encompass an occupation, family dynamics, financial obligations and healthcare situations. They engage with various SESLOC staff playing various roles including realtors, retailers, bankers and car dealers to simulate essential purchases such as housing, transportation, groceries and clothing. Additionally, the event incorporates a “credit union” component to provide students with guidance on their financial needs.
The objective is for students to navigate challenges like unexpected expenses and economic fluctuations through hands-on experiences, bridging the gap between knowledge and practical application to better prepare them for future financial realities.
“Bite of Reality is a really fun and eye-opening event for our students,” said Stacey Nairne, Pacific Beach High School teacher. “The fact that it is hands on and interactive really engages our students … [they] really get into the activity and are truly perplexed when they run out of money in a short amount of time! I love watching them as they get a glimpse of how easy it is to overspend by trying to get all the things they want.”
