On Monday, May 20, SESLOC Credit Union hosted a hands-on, real-world living and budgeting simulation event for 70 students at Central Coast New Tech High School in Nipomo.
For this event, SESLOC partnered with Bite of Reality, an app that presents real-life scenarios of maintaining a budget, to improve the financial health and wellness of the Central Coast.
“By having students experience “real world” financial situations, they can be better prepared when they gain their own financial independence,” said SESLOC’s Education Outreach Manager, Vincent Delgado.
To accomplish this, a variety of tables were staffed by SESLOC volunteers who provided the opportunity to purchase a house, buy a vehicle, shop for groceries, acquire utilities and more. Students then decided what products they would spend or save their money on. In the case a participant were to go over budget, the credit union hosted a specific table where participants could find assistance in prioritizing their budget.
“Our students really enjoyed Bite of Reality. They were curious and engaged the whole time,” said Central Coast New Tech Highschool teacher, Ryan James. “The SESLOC volunteers running the stations were enthusiastic and eager to educate our students. A great experience for students to learn about finances in the real world, we’ll definitely have them back next year.”
